Magnificent success for the Al Torcio oil mill at New York's NYIOOC 2021 - the world's most prestigious olive oil competition

"We are very proud of the success we’ve achieved, although we did not expect such a large number of awards," Karmino Beletic, CEO of Al Torcio, told the Olive Oil Times. "It was an exceptional performance for us this year and has exceeded all our expectations."

Part of what has led to Al Torcio’s success is their complete control of the olive oil production process, which includes their newly-updated on-site mill.

The Al Torcio oil mill has won numerous awards, notably two gold medals at NYIOOC, the world's largest and most prestigious competition for olive oils

The Al Torcio oil mill has won numerous international awards in olive oil competitions around the world. As representatives of Croatia, in 2005 they were the first to be included in the world's most prestigious guide to extra virgin olive oils L'Extravergine, now named Flos Olei, whose criteria for inclusion in the guide are extremely strict and professional. This makes them pioneers, both of Croatia and in the production of extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality. They have continued to be listed in the guide year after year to this day, which speaks volumes about the continuity and consistency that has been maintained throughout the years.

Flos Olei - a manual and guide to learning about olive oil production

Flos Olei provides the results of careful tasting of a large number of samples from the olive oil industry. The samples come from 51 countries across five continents and Flos Olei publishes a list of the best 500. This popular guide, known as the ‘bible’ of extra virgin olive oils, includes Al Torcio olive oil, which scored 94 out of a possible 100 points in 2018, in competition with over 1,800 oils from around the world. In addition, as many as 71 olive oils from Istria were listed. This is especially significant considering that the publication lists oils from across the globe, and even among such esteemed company, Istrian olive growers are among the most represented with a total share of 14%.

For professionals and consumers, Flos Olei is a manual and guide to getting to know the various aspects of olive growing. According to the publishers, it is intended for gastronomes, but also for experts in the field of olive growing, agronomists, olive growers and operators, as well as caterers. To be included as a producer in this guide is a great reward and recognition, since all products listed are top-quality olive oils and the competition spans worldwide. Istria is the world's best olive growing region - for the sixth year in a row!

The success of Istrian olive growers is not accidental. In addition to favourable agro-climatic conditions, the special composition of the soil and low temperatures allow olives a short vegetative phase, while the accumulation of oil in the olive fruits begins later than in southern areas where temperatures negatively affect the quality. This is a great benefit to Istria and Istrian olive growers.

Der Feinschmecker

Since 2012, Itrana, Bianchera and autochthonous Istrian Rosulja oils have been ranked among the world's best oils by the German gourmet magazine Der Feinschmecker from Hamburg, with Leccino oil ranked in second place.

As the only producer from Croatia, Al Torcio was the second-place finalist at Concorso Medoliva 2012, the international fair of Mediterranean extra virgin olive oils held in Arezzo, Italy, behind the Spanish producer Oleum Artis.

Michelin Star

Since last year, Al Torcio has been included in the catalogue of the best Michelin Star restaurants in Europe. Al Torcio oils have received a number of awards, gold plaques and medals at various European competitions and fairs (Hamburg, Madrid, London, Paris and Rome).
